Dear FEMA,

Please get your ducks in a row over Web Standards. Microsoft Products are not W3C and are very insecure.

I posted this blog - http://AgainstTheMachine.blogspot.com - and hope to get some response out of Microsoft.

We can't live with Government Agencies being "locked" into some Monopoly's idea of a standaard.

I also just now saw the comment regarding the modification to allow other browsers. I am glad you listened.

Thanks and best of luck with Katrina disaster.

Regards,

  Rant Against
I wanted to watch the video of Apple's CEO Steve Jobs showing off the new Nano.... Well, the page says "MSN Video works with Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6, Microsoft Media Player 10, and Macromedia Flash 7." Direct link: (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9241311/). I use Linux®, so what can I do? This is a rhetorical question, because I am geek enough to know ways around MS's faulted web "standards".

This such insanity really irks people who don't have Internet Explorer®. Much of the IT community calls it Internet Exploiter. Why? I state this because www.cert.org and even the back in July 2004, the United States Department of Homeland Security, among others have said to stop using IE - Firefox should be used instead.

The lowly web developer takes what is given fed to him/her and many believe MS is the god of all IT companys. However, most informed IT personnel are more enlightened and some of the top dogs as well know the true value of MS. The problem is apathy - they sit idly by and do nothing to make a positive change. Here is the spak which really made me write this rant, but it is just one of the utter perversion of web standards when using monopoly standards.

I read that FEMA (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9231271), for God's sake has been "locked" into IE purgatory. The poor people from New Orleans and the Gulf, who drastically require access the FEMA website can only do so with IE on Windows!

Note the link is from the article on your own sister site.

There was a time when I thought Mr. Gates knew how to treat his customers. He appeared to care and know what people wanted in an OS. Well, there's a lot of water under the bridge and it is speedily eroding the banks of trust in Microsoft's products.

Along with myself and many others poor souls, I wasted many a month/year patching buggy and insecure MS products. I still have to do so and require payment for my services. Too much of my life is devoted to repairing MS's faulty proucts.

Our opinions (the geek), and I know I speak for many, will be heard and have an impact for the betterment of society. Fortunately, the latest battle to maintain Desktop/Office dominance has changed many opinions, especially in the Linux Community.

Through our determination and perseverance, we will see Linux become the de facto standard for the Desktop (Linux has already won the server market). Sure, Mr. Gates will not lose much sleep over Linux with the likes of Mr. Balmer running the gauntlet, but I honestly hope both sleep very lightly at night; they should be concerned.

FOR GOD'S SAKE, PLEASE MAKE A CHANGE FOR UNIVERSAL STANDARDS, NOT WRITE YOUR OWN "STANDARDS" TO SUIT YOUR BUSINESS MODEL.

Standards are something the Internet was founded on... See http://www.ietf.org or http://www.w3.org or http://www.webstandards.org. People and Companys must comply with standards, why not Microsoft©? If we are to maintain any sanity with the Internet, standards remain of utmost priority - especially for a company positioned so highly in the IT world.

Without standards how would the Meter, a Gallon of gasoline or water or the weight of gold be measured? How many dead or hobbled sites does it take before your company wakes up and smells the truth?? I sincerely hope Mr. Balmer and Mr. Gates read web blogs. If they do, please make sure they see this.

We must comply to W3C standards. The whole world needs them. We have a responsibility to everyone, even the one who needs our help in such troubled times.

One monopoly's failed attempt at world domination is something we can all do without.

No. This time I totally refuse to be anonymous.

I am president of the Middle Georgia Linux Users Group and will voice this information to the whole Internet. And, more importantly it will be W3 standards compliant. I will also contact my Congressmen/women, FEMA, and other Government sites "requiring" IE.

Sincerely concerned,

Jeff Hatfield
